Checkpoint Information

The next checkpoint is Friday, September 7, 2001 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Madison, Alabama 4,000 points

Rally staff will be available at 5 a.m. to begin check-in.Riders due in by 8:00:00 a.m. Any rider who arrives after 8:00:00 a.m. will be charged with a 30 point per minute penalty. Any rider who arrives after 10:00:00 a.m. will not receive credit for making this checkpoint.

Time penalty begins 8:00:01 a.m. After 8:00:00 a.m. there will be a 30 point per minute penalty for being late. "Minutes" will be rounded up at one second past the key time. For example, 8:00:01 (one second past 8:00 a.m.) will be counted as 1 minute late. Any rider who arrives after 10 a.m. (10:00:01 a.m.) will not receive credit for making this checkpoint and will not receive bonus points for this leg of the rally.

Friday, September 7, 2001: A well deserved congratulation celebration (exact location to be announced at the end of the rally but it will be off-site away from the Ramada). While this is not an official rally function, however, Bob Ray and the Iron Butt Association will host a post-rally party following the Iron Butt Rally Awards Banquet. All entrants, prior finishers, and their guests are welcome. Music and beverages will be provided! As with earlier events that Bob Ray has hosted, transportation to/from the hotels and the clubhouse will be arranged (i.e. designated drivers in minivans). Bring your swimsuit for a nice post-rally swim.

To earn these points you must provide a written account of your route from this checkpoint to the next as outlined below:

Portsmouth is located on the New Hampshire/Maine border just to the east of I-95. From I-95, take Exit 7, turn left on Market Street Extension to downtown, proceeding east, then southeast for .9 mile. (Market St. Extension narrows and becomes simply Market Street, which is One Way. Beware the right at the Sheraton, it will take you onto Russell and Deer Streets and get you quite lost.) At Bow St. on the left, with the King Tiki bar ahead, Market St. deviates about 30 degrees to the right. Proceed south .08 mile. At Market Square, with the white steeple of North Church ahead, bear right. Proceed southwest along Congress St. about 150 feet to High St. Turn right on High St - One Way. Proceed northwest about 200 feet to Ladd St - One Way. Turn right on Ladd St, proceed less than 100 feet east-northeast to Federal Tobacconists.

The Bowling Green Bull is located on Broadway at the fork just south of Morris Street and just north of Bowling Green Park near the very south end of Manhattan. Although written directions are provided, it is best if you look at any New York City map (most are included in state maps) and follow the routing before you get to New York.

From I-95 coming from the West: Take the Henry Hudson Parkway (Route 9) south from the George Washington Bridge. The Henry Hudson Parkway becomes Joe DiMaggio Highway. Exit at Vesey Street on the left. Follow Vesey Street to Broadway/Canyon of Heroes. Turn right onto Broadway/Canyon of Heroes. The Bull is at the fork just south of Morris Street.

From I-95 coming from the East: Take the Bruckner Expressway west, cross the Triborough Bridge into Manahattan, take the FDR Drive South to Exit 1, Battery Park. Follow the exit as it turns into State St (the Staten Island Ferry is to the left and there is construction here). Turn right onto Greenwich St which turns into Trinity Place. Turn right on Rector. Turn right onto Broadway. The Bull is just south of Morris St at the fork.

Alternate directions coming from the east:

From I-95 coming from the East: Take the Harlem River Drive south which becomes the FDR Drive after 125th Street. Follow signs for Brooklyn Battery Tunnel (go down into Battery Park Underpass). Ride past Tunnel entrance and turn Right onto Rector Street. Turn Right onto Broadway/Canyon Of Heroes.
